Bonjour. It’s been a fast-paced and energizing Bonjour. It’s been a fast-paced and energizing weekend in beautiful Angers where history, glorious sights and jaw-dropping art venues await. The medieval fortress towering over the city, the stories and magnificent “Tapestry of the Apocalypse” inside, are just… icing on the cake. One thing’s for sure: When I return, I’ll book again at the welcoming, 2-star Hôtel Marguerite d’Anjou (part of the Logis de France network.) Friendly staff, neighborhood feel, comfortable, updated rooms, with more storage I’ve found all season in more… ahem… high end properties. Location, location, location, they say. Check, check and check. The hotel sits in the heart of town, at the foot of the fortress. Qui dit mieux? Bonjour, Many in the United States will be celeb Bonjour, Many in the United States will be celebrating Thanksgiving today. I've attended quite a few Thanksgiving parties over the years. What I remember most vividly is the generosity of my friends who always made sure this French Girl (and her family) would be included on that special day. In challenging times, it can be harder to see the silver lining and state out loud what we are grateful for. We've all had a few of those challenging times over the last 2+ years, n'est-ce-pas? I am grateful, always, for "les petits bonheurs" (small joys) I get to enjoy even at the most unexpected times. Here on social media, I am grateful for the great France with Vero community. Old or new friends, you have been by my side over the last 11 years to celebrate happy news and cheered me on when I rode out a few storms. This community is now 32,000 members strong and counting. Here's to the next 1,000 francophiles who will be joining us soon! Merci à tous, and if you are American too, whether at home or abroad, Happy Thanksgiving! Bonjour, Today is the day: the release of Beaujo Bonjour, Today is the day: the release of Beaujolais Nouveau. The hoopla will leave many foreigners scratching their heads. After all, why are the French so big on tasting a very young wine that’s likely to come with headaches and hangovers the following morning? Some answers: 1. The celebration of Beaujolais Nouveau is a clever marketing coup launched in the 1960s, not a millennial tradition. 2. This is the wine everyone claims to hate but they sample anyway. Reviews will often mention the word “banane,” a popular joke referring to the Beaujolais Nouveau’s “special” taste. 3. It doesn’t matter if the wine isn’t that great. Like the popular “apéro,” the celebration of the release of Beaujolais Nouveau is mostly a chance to get together with friends or colleagues and have a good time. Everyone loves a good French bistro. Tours, my cit Everyone loves a good French bistro. Tours, my city, has many, making dinner reservations a casse-tête (headache.) Once in a while, it’s also nice to stray away from traditional bistro fare. Cue in “Beurre-Noisette” along rue du Grand Marché, in Tours. Friendly Clemence (a talented baker) and her team welcome guests with delicious, home-cooked lunches (Suffice it to say Clemence’s sandwich line is one step or two above the traditional jambon-beurre) brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and, my favorite part, a mouth-watering selection of pâtisseries and cookies baked daily. If you are a fan of the classic “financier” (an almond flavored petit gâteau involving… “beurre noisette”) I recommend the pistachio flavor. Whether you dunk or not, is entirely votre affaire. Now that the rain has returned to the Loire Valley, I foresee there will be many mornings and afternoons for moi chez Beurre-Noisette. Who knows?
